Training in Session: A Behind the Scenes Look at Training at Morantz Ultrasonics

At Morantz, we take a different approach to training than what’s typical for the industry. We prefer to keep it a little “old school,” with an emphasis on hands-on, individualized attention. Over the years we’ve found that this approach results in students who are far better trained and ready to be productive. You can see this on display in this post. Below, we feature just a few of our clients who have either visited us at our headquarters in Philadelphia or had us visit with them at their location for on-site training.

Now, that’s not to say we don’t keep up with the times. We’ve recently held several, very successful online webinars and are planning more, but there’s something about spending that quality, face-to-face time with our customers that sitting in front of a computer just can’t duplicate. That’s one of the reasons we built a new, state-of-the-art training center at Morantz HQ, and we’re ready to start filling those seats (learn more about our new training center below)!

In the meantime, scroll down to learn more about our training (or click here), and meet some of our successful students. There’s a reason why they’re smiling. Can you guess why?

Did you know that training is free of charge at Morantz Ultrasonics? This has been the Morantz policy for over 55 years, and it’s not changing. According to Lisa Morantz, President of Morantz Ultrasonics, “Our customers invest in equipment to make their businesses profitable, but owning the equipment is only one half of a winning formula. Equally important is having personnel that “buy in” and are excited to use the machines. They need to know how to properly operate the equipment, and know who to ask for assistance when questions arise. This is why training and support is always free of charge, and I encourage every one of our customers to take advantage of it.

The free training we offer at our Philadelphia World Headquarters has long been one of our most popular services. Now, with the opening of our new training center (affectionately known as Morantz University, or “Morantz U“), we’re looking forward to seeing our clients come for a full day of hands-on training where they learn things like how to properly set-up, use and maintain their Morantz Ultrasonic Cleaning Systems. “It’s a fun, interactive day,” said Lisa Morantz. “We work one-on-one with our customers to make sure they have our undivided attention, that their questions are answered, and that they leave with a tremendous feeling of confidence and the skills they need to use their machines.

While we certainly want to fill those seats, we know that a trip to Philly isn’t always possible. For those who can’t make the trip, who can’t send their entire staffs or who have specific and specialized needs, the best alternative is to have a Morantz Certified Trainer come right to their facility (for a reasonable fee – call (215) 969-0266 for details). This was the case for one of our long-time clients, York Caskets, a division of Matthews International.

York purchased their Z-97 in 2007 to clean very specific parts used in the manufacture of caskets. Morantz had worked with York to develop specialized cleaning procedures and York sent staff to Philadelphia for training. However, just a few years later, York had a lot of new employees who were struggling with the machine. After a quick call to Morantz, we visited them at their facility and held a comprehensive training session for 10 of their new employees.

When the trainees see the amazing results and understand how easy their work can be when the process is done properly, they begin to relax and have fun with it,” says Robby Zeaman, a Morantz Ultrasonics Certified Trainer.

If the people you’re training feel comfortable with you, they will feel comfortable reaching out to you again with their questions,” added Zeaman. “It’s so important that they know they have someone to answer these questions. The machines aren’t hard to use, but there are some specific things the operators need to know to get good results. If they get frustrated, they’ll give up and go back to whatever outdated and inefficient method they were using. It defeats the purpose.

In addition to training equipment operators, Morantz also provides Business and Marketing Training. For example, at a recent on-site training at Servpro of West Kirkwood in Missouri, Lisa Morantz not only spent much of the day training the Contents Restoration staff, she also took time to work with their marketing department to review advertising tactics and to discuss how to pursue some new opportunities that have opened up.

Finally, Morantz made a presentation to the Continuing Education class being held at Servpro that same day. Jeff Chestnas (Servpro owner) told Morantz that he was thrilled that she incorporated a live demonstration, plus a fun and dynamic question and answer session. He believes Lisa’s presentation had an immediate benefit to his business.

Morantz has also worked directly with customers helping them clean their very first jobs. What a great way to train!

Lisa Morantz tells us, “There’s nothing like having your staff jump right in with their first job and see immediate results. They get excited and it goes a long way in building their confidence.”

Finally, for those who don’t have the budget to either visit with Morantz or have an on-site trainer visit them, Morantz is now offering a training session on Facetime through the iPhone/iPad. Clients can schedule a time for Morantz to call, and a Certified Trainer will talk the staff through the use of the equipment. This service is also provided free of charge.

FEATURED SUCCESS STORY: Puroclean of Green Bay, Wisconsin

Adding Ultrasonic Cleaning to their restoration company has added new profit centers.

Mark Mazzoleni-Puroclean-Green Bay-250x333
Mark Mazzoleni from Puroclean, Green Bay, WI giving Morantz Ultrasonics the “Thumbs Up”

Mark Mazzoleni, owner of a Puroclean franchise in Green Bay, Wisconsin was struggling with fire restoration jobs. The hand cleaning work his staff was doing was too time consuming and not enough jobs were coming in. Mark also wanted to diversify his services and keep his staff busy when they were not busy with fire work. In 2011, he began researching Ultrasonic Cleaning as a possible way to achieve his goals.

I began looking for used Ultrasonic equipment to get started, and purchased two Morantz tanks in May 2011. One of these tanks was for content restoration and the other was a blind cleaning machine,” Mark said. “I liked the idea of offering a service for blinds and saw that as a real profit center, which ultimately it has proven to be.

Mark soon realized that these two tanks were going to be helpful to get started, but were not going to allow him to process the quantity of Contents he was beginning to bring in. This is when he started looking into the Morantz M-115 Super System. “Once I realized how streamlined the Pre-Wash, Ultrasonic Wash, Rinse and Dry stations were, I decided to jump in and purchase the entire Morantz Super System. It was the best decision!“.

Mark tells us that his employees absolutely love using the Super System. “Once my staff saw how easy it is to use the equipment to do their job, they were 100% on board“, states Mark.  He continues, “One of the best things about working with Morantz is their unlimited, free training. I’ve had staff turn-over in the past 3 years, including my Contents Manager. Morantz will train as many people as I need them to. I’ve sent staff members to Philadelphia for training, and most recently we’ve even done training by Facetime over the iPhone, which was incredible!

Mark Mazzoleni and Joe Leggett
Mark Mazzoleni and Joe Leggett from Morantz Ultrasonics at the Puroclean Convention in Louisville, KY.

Mark continues, “The training sets the tone of the relationship with Morantz. My staff knows that if they have any questions, they can call Morantz and get answers. I’ve called myself quite a few times, and each time I get the support I need from Lisa, Heather and the Morantz staff. Joe Leggett, Morantz’s longtime employee of 35 years, knows me by name and is always happy to answer my questions.

Mark recently presented his Ultrasonic cleaning service to a large company in the Green Bay area that rents equipment to disabled, home-bound people. They needed a method of both cleaning and disinfecting these items to be able in order to rent them out again. “I initially received CPAP machines and oxygen tanks test clean and deodorize. The company who rents these struggled because even though you are not supposed to smoke while using these devices, people do. Nicotine and smoke odor permeate the devices, and no matter what they had tried, they could not get these items clean. They were thrilled when I presented Ultrasonic Cleaning as a solution.” Below are pictures of these items.

FEATURED SUCCESS STORY: AmeriDri of Colorado Springs

Incorporating Ultrasonic Contents Restoration into AmeriDri’s Fire Restoration Services Brings in Big Business!

Joe Crivello, owner of AmeriDri in Colorado Springs, CO knew he needed a better system for Contents Restoration. Although his staff works very hard, cleaning by hand was just taking too long. Not only that, items were not getting fully cleaned and the types of items he could clean was frustratingly limited. To make matter worse, all of this was impacting his profits.

According to Joe, “I began researching Ultrasonic equipment and Morantz came highly recommended to me. I wanted a piece of equipment that I could grow with, yet would not take up a great deal of space, would work with my current electrical capacity in my facility (110v), and that would be affordable. Luckily the Morantz M-115 “Mighty One” fit all of my requirements.

When Joe took delivery of his machine, he immediately got to work telling his customers about all of the new contents he could clean for them. “I was so excited to be able to offer electronics cleaning as part of our services,” said Joe. “When I started to actually get the jobs to clean Electronics in house, I knew it was time to train my staff properly on all the techniques using this amazing machine. We were so excited; Lisa Morantz personally came to our facility to perform our training. Lisa worked with my staff on multiple jobs that we had waiting. Everything from crystal to stuffed animals to computers was covered, and that was just the beginning. My staff was so excited they began bringing in personal items from their desks and cars to learn what else we can clean.

Joe continues, “Something else that I learned during our training session is that we can now maintain own restoration equipment in our M-115 machine. This has made cleaning our equipment an easy process and is a huge time saver!

Joe’s staff absolutely loves the Mighty One’s pneumatic lift. This feature alone helped with the staff’s “buy in” because it makes cleaning easy by lowering items into the tank and raising them out with the touch of a lever. “I was sold on this important feature as I didn’t want my staff dealing with heavy lifting,” He said. Plus, Joe recognizes the benefit of processing 4 contents baskets at once. This capability moves the cleaning along at a very fast rate.

During training, Lisa spent time discussing my facility layout and made specific suggestions to improve our workflow,” said Joe. “This was one of the advantages to having her come out and spend time with us. Plus, Lisa covered all aspects of our business, not just the ins and outs of the equipment. My manager and I even reviewed our marketing strategies with her. Lisa made several recommendations on selling the service that I plan to incorporate into my business.

Joe has also incorporated iCAT, Morantz’s software partner, into his process. With these professional tools in place, AmeriDri has been experiencing tremendous growth, and more importantly, can handle the growth with ease.

SUCCESS STORY: Kleena of Australia increases business by 200% with Morantz Ultrasonics

Mick Bantoft, Owner of Kleena
Mick Bantoft, Owner of Kleena

Meet Mick Bantoft, owner and operator of Kleena in Queensland, Australia (kleenabc.com.au). Over the past 8 years, Mick has used Morantz Ultrasonics to create an entirely new niche market for his company cleaning curtains, microfiber cloths, trolley covers, privacy curtains, blinds, soot damaged contents and other hard to clean items for hospitals and hotels.

Shaking Up Business

In 2006, Mick Bantoft knew he had to shake up his curtain cleaning business or risk losing it. He flew half way around the world to attend a cleaning tradeshow in search of the “next big thing,” something that would help grow his business. During his browsing, he saw the Morantz Ultrasonics cleaning systems. Immediately, Mick knew he had found what he was looking for. “I was completely amazed with what I was seeing. Fabrics, like the ones I clean were being put into the machine and came out cleaner than I could ever get them, and all within seconds,” Mick said. Mick decided then and there to learn as much as he could about ultrasonics. A short time later, he was on a plane to Philadelphia to see all that Morantz had to offer. After a few days at Morantz H.Q., Mick ordered his first set of machines, a Morantz 3-in-1 System, and got to work.

The learning curve was short and once my staff and I really began to understand the full capabilities of these machines, the excitement and work continued to grow.” said Mick. “I focused primarily on blinds and curtains in my first year because it was my client base. I was able to process existing jobs in a much shorter amount of time which generated higher profit margins and left me time to explore and promote other types of cleaning.

Branching Out

Mick and his staff soon returned to Morantz H.Q. and attended a Morantz’s Firesonics® Seminar where they learned more about how to use ultrasonics to clean soot and smoke damaged items including electronics. “Very few people offer content cleaning in Australia. I knew this was a great opportunity to get my foot in the door. As soon as I started promoting it, the work came so quickly I ordered a SM-200 Super Mighty One from Morantz to dedicate to the contents side. I also purchased a golf club cleaning machine to promote content cleaning and other services at tournaments and meetings.” Mick added, “When I realized how useful the pneumatic lift on the SM-200 was for lifting heavy items, I started using it for curtain cleaning and it made a huge difference! My female employees were struggling with lifting wet, heavy curtains out of the tank, but the lift made this process of lifting and draining very easy.

A Better Drying Process

As both his curtain cleaning and content cleaning businesses continued to grow, Mick knew he needed a better drying process. “While some curtains can air dry, other types need to be dried quickly or else browning starts to appear. Electronics also must be dried quickly and at higher temperatures. I had seen the Morantz Drye Rite cabinet, loved it, but needed something much bigger to accommodate all I had to dry on a daily basis. I had Lisa (Morantz) build me what is now the Drye Rite XL. It’s a full, room size dryer complete with Infrared Heat and Ozone for deodorization. We have both our contents and our curtains on rolling racks and roll them in and out. It’s incredible and has increased my productivity tremendously!

Hospitals Took Notice

In 2010, Mick started seeing a significant increase in work from local hospitals. When he presented the data from Morantz’s independent testing (testing confirmed that ultrasonics not only sanitizes, but disinfects), hospitals really took notice. Mick tells us, “MRSA and C-Diff are big issues for hospitals. Morantz’s testing set a new standard that no other method of cleaning could touch. Now I had the capability of offering services well beyond privacy curtain cleaning. With my equipment, I clean wheelchairs, slings, trolleys, trolley covers, bed-side tables, microfibers, patient restraints… Some of the items they give me, I don’t even know what they’re for! The work orders keep growing and I keep bringing on new hospitals.

Expanding… Again!

Business was growing so fast that Mick needed to expand yet again. After moving to a larger and newer building, he spoke to Lisa Morantz about adapting one of Morantz’s newer models, the SM-200-XL which had primarily been used for industrial parts cleaning, to suit his needs. “We put our heads together and came up with unique features which makes the new SM-200-XL a hybrid machine with all the best features Morantz has to offer,” said Mick. “I now use this model for everything I do and couldn’t be more pleased. It’s been terrific for all the new curtain cleaning and lamp shade work I am getting from hotels.”

Growing by 200%

By 2014, since meeting Morantz, Mick has increased his business by 200%. His processes with the Morantz machines can now be duplicated around the country, and that’s just what he intends to do. Mick has just completed a new deal to bring Morantz Ultrasonic equipment, and his know-how, to a major Australian cleaning franchise.

Congratulations to Mick and the entire team at Kleena. Best wishes for your continued success.

How to Stay Clean in Space

At Morantz, we love talking about different kinds of cleaning. In this post, we discuss issues with keeping clean in space. As it turns out, it’s a big problem.

NASA LogoOne of the challenges of space missions is keeping clean. While personal hygiene is difficult enough in space, future missions to the Moon and Mars are going to encounter another, very difficult cleaning problem; dust contamination.

Most people don’t realize this, but space is a very dusty and dirty place. Comets are often described as “dirty snowballs” and the Apollo astronauts experienced significant problems on the Moon with lunar dust (see: NASA’s Dirty Secret: Moon Dust , and What a Little Moon Dust Can Do).

On January 16, the Mars Society posted to space.com about the problems they’re having keeping their “mock” Mars base clean. The Mars Society is conducting a mock “mission” to learn about how astronauts might live on Mars at their Desert Research Station near Hanksville, Utah (for full coverage, click here). The problems they’re having with dirt and dust contamination are pretty serious. These problems include the amount of time it takes just to clean their equipment. Another is that the dust is getting everywhere. And that’s here on Earth (under gravity). Imagine what can happen when the dust is floating around your spaceship.

What’s a wayward astronaut to do?

At Morantz, we’ve provided ultrasonic cleaning systems to NASA for various applications and we’ve identified three problems with dirt and dust in space:

  1. It wears down critical components: Not only can the static electricity damage valuable and critical equipment, the dust itself gets into seals and wears them down. When you’re floating around an asteroid, you don’t want your spacesuit leaking.
  2. It creates health risks: Even after roughly fifty years of space travel, we really don’t know what’s in all that dust, that’s why we want to go and collect samples. While most people worry about little alien space viruses, the chemicals that make up the dust itself could be poisonous. The astronauts on the Moon said that lunar dust smelled and tasted like gunpowder. Nasty!
  3. The unknown: Who knows what else could happen? Space, buy it’s nature, is unpredictable.

Astronaut Gene Cernan on the Moon in December 1972. His spacesuit is blackened by lunar dust. According to NASA, “a real hazard that might have caused hatch and spacesuit seals to fail on a longer surface mission.” [NASA/JSC]
Astronaut Gene Cernan on the Moon in December 1972. His spacesuit is blackened by lunar dust. According to NASA, “a real hazard that might have caused hatch and spacesuit seals to fail on a longer surface mission.” [NASA/JSC]
Considering the problems and potential dangers for dust contamination and the limited water supplies (astronauts have to bring everything with them), the solution is both obvious and simple; they need to use Ultrasonics to clean their equipment.

Now, Ultrasonics does require water, something that’s in limited supply in space. That means they would have to bring an extra supply with them, but that water can be filtered (ask us about our filtration systems) or recycled using reverse osmosis. But the benefits outweigh the costs of bringing that water with them. This is because Ultrasonics will remove all of the dust and dirt (and mud and whatever other contaminants they have to deal with) in just a few minutes without the need for toxic chemicals. This leaves the astronauts with more time doing science, and whatever else astronauts do, instead of scrubbing boots.

FEATURED SUCCESS STORY: Cleaning up in Italy!

Buongiorno and welcome to Milan, Italy! We bring you all the way around the globe to meet Michele Lazzarotto, owner of Elle Emme custom window treatments and LavareTutto (literally translated from Italian to mean “Wash All“).

Michele Lazzarotto with his Morantz B-136 "Baby" Blind Cleaning Machine.
Michele Lazzarotto with his Morantz B-136 “Baby” Blind Cleaning Machine.

Michele and his family operate several businesses all over Italy that custom manufacture window treatments of all types including blinds and curtains. He has owned and operated his famous shop in Milan for nearly 25 years.

How He Got His Start

Michele first learned about Morantz’s blind cleaning equipment in 2008 while researching on the internet ways to properly clean blinds for his clients. Amazed with what he saw, Michele booked his flight to Philadelphia to see the machines in action. He even brought samples of fabrics and blinds to test clean. Excited by the results, Michele placed his order for equipment.

I could not believe the opportunity I had come across when I saw the Morantz blind cleaning machine working, exclaims Michele. “No one in Italy was offering to clean blinds. The market was wide open and desperately in need of this type of cleaning“.

Michele let all of his long-time customers know that he can now service all the window blinds he had sold them. He also created a separate company and website, Lavarre Tutto, to start promoting everything he could clean. Soon he had jobs not only cleaning blinds, but items such as hubcaps, wood stools, metal parts (including engine parts), light diffusers and much more.  Here are some photos he sent us to share with our readers, Prima (Before) and Dopo (After):

A Machine Called “Money!

Michele lovingly named his blind cleaning machine “Money,” and the name has stuck to this day. “It is unbelievable how much money this machine continues to make, so the name fits,” Michele said. “My staff is constantly busy with cleaning blinds of all types: Roller shades, mini blinds, vertical blinds and more.”

How He “Sells” It

One of the many ways Michele promotes ultrasonic cleaning to his clients is by hooking them on the technology when they visit his shop. Next to his coffee machine proudly sits his Morantz SZ-400 Table-Top System. During offers to clean his clients jewelry and eyeglasses. While cleaning, he explains that this is the same technology that he uses to clean blinds. “It works beautifully and demonstrates my capabilities for cleaning,” says Michele.

Success, and More Success

Michele was doing so much ultrasonic cleaning that in 2011 he purchased a second machine, the Morantz SM-200-XL. “With the XL machine, I am able to clean a wide variety of items including curtains and even multiple blinds at once. This all-purpose system has really opened up Ultrasonic Cleaning to my company. We have diversified in ways we never dreamed of.

Expanding his Business

To procure commercial cleaning jobs, Michele takes his machines to tradeshows in Italy including the largest exhibition for window blinds as well as the largest for general cleaning. In this way, he is constantly in front of decision makers showcasing his company’s technology and capabilities. “When I show potential clients how Morantz Ultrasonics works, they can’t believe what they are seeing  I create a lot of excitement at these trade fairs, and have taken on many large commercial jobs as a result of these exhibitions.”

Michele recently completed a large commercial blind cleaning job for one of the many buildings on the campus of ENI Petrol Company. They were so pleased with the outcome that they have now hired Michele’s company to clean another 5000 blinds this Spring!

I Get Calls Every Day

Michele tells us that he is constantly receiving calls for his service. “I get calls everyday,” He says, and with the economy in a major slump in Italy, and with local banks not loaning money, he is glad he invested in the equipment. “Small businesses are closing everywhere in Italy. Companies like mine who manufacture and sells blinds are very slow, so they’re looking to maintain what they own,” He said. “The timing could not be better for me to offer this service for blinds and other items. Ultrasonic cleaning is not only keeping my doors open for business, it’s growing my business.

The Success Keeps Coming

Michele has sent us even more photos including those for the job above. You can see them on our Facebook Page. All of our best wishes for continued success to Michele Lazzarotto and the entire Elle Emme and Lavare Tutto team.

Keep cleaning up in Italy!

Ciao!

Kraft Foods Cleaning with Morantz Ultrasonics

Kraft Bakery Building
Kraft Bakery Building

There are many uses for our Ultrasonic Cleaning Systems, but just when we thought we knew them all, along comes something new. A few months ago, I was contacted by an energy optimization company that works for many large companies including Kraft Foods Inc. Kraft had a specific part for their baking ovens that needed to be cleaned and the pressure washing/hand cleaning they were doing wasn’t working. The question posed to me was, “Can you clean them?” My answer: “I don’t know until we try”. So that’s just what we did, and as usual, our machines worked beautifully.

As a result, over the past couple of months I personally visited several Kraft bakeries to install custom equipment and train their staff on the operation of the system. The photos that follow are from Kraft’s Chicago operation (which as I was told is the largest bakery in the world!). I have no doubt as each of their ovens was literally a football field long (that’s Gridiron football for all you non US citizens reading this).

Kraft’s needs were specific and they required a machine built to their specifications. In most instances, one of our standard (or slightly modified) machine models will work for a specific application, this time we had to build a specialized system. Working closely with Kraft’s engineers, we built exactly what they needed. Below is a photo of Kraft’s new system now installed in their bakeries throughout the U.S.

Objectives: Create mutually beneficial partnerships. Expand your sales reach.
Tips: Offer these partners a Referral Fee or wholesale price for each blind cleaned. Not only will they make extra money, this will build good will with their customers by not “forcing” a new blind sale when all that is needed is a good cleaning. In fact, you should suggest that the designer or seller offer their customers a “Maintenance Plan.” Once these customers know there is an easy and affordable maintenance plan, they are more apt to purchase those more expensive “designer” type blinds. This will also give them an opportunity to periodically visit their customers where they could then sell new blinds for other areas in their home or business.
  3. Idea: Clean Sports Equipment for Local Teams & Toys for Daycares.
Applications: Contents Restoration, Janitorial Cleaning and Medical Cleaning for Infection Control.
Objective: Diversify your services and customer base.
Tips: Your local sports teams, whether they’re professional, collegiate or league-based, are more concerned than ever about the health issues resulting from unclean equipment. Offer to do a free cleaning of a few items to demonstrate the effectiveness of Ultrasonic Cleaning for Infection Control (this could even include your local school’s gym equipment or toys in a nearby day care). Morantz provides our clients with results from independent laboratory tests for you to share with your customers during the sales process. And be sure to bring your ATP testing kit to quantify and support your results.
  4. Idea: Clean Your Doctor’s Offices (Including Pediatricians and Dentists) & Senior Citizen Facilities.
    Applications:
    Medical Cleaning & Infection Control.
    Objective: Diversify your customer base.
Tips: Medical cleaning isn’t limited to large hospitals. Because of their small size, your local practitioners and senior centers often have problems maintaining sterile environments in their facilities. It’s not just the medical equipment; it’s the window blinds in the waiting and examination rooms, the computer keyboards at the nurse’s stations, the individual wheel chairs and even the toys in the pediatrician’s office. Morantz provides our clients with results from independent laboratory tests for you to share with your customers during the sales process. And don’t forget your ATP testing kit to quantify and support your results.
  5. Idea: Partner with Your Local Computer Services Companies.
    Applications: Electronics Cleaning.
Objectives: Create mutually beneficial partnerships. Expand your sales reach.
Tips: Computer Services companies provide maintenance and technical support for businesses both large and small. Aside from installing software and hardware, Ultrasonic Cleaning gives them a new, “Value-Added” service to sell. Show them the benefits of cleaning their customer’s computers and tools with Ultrasonics. Ultrasonic Cleaning keeps computers running smoothly, prevents them from overheating and starting fires, avoids the loss of valuable data, stops employees from getting sick through sharing infected tools and equipment (which also improves productivity) and more.
  6. Idea: Sponsor Industry Events.
    Applications: All.
Objectives: Diversify your customer base. Create mutually beneficial partnerships. Expand your sales reach.
Tips: Local business organizations are constantly looking for companies to sponsor events. They also like to showcase something that can attract attendees. In exchange for a nominal fee (or maybe just free food), you can bring your machine to their event and do a demonstration. And remember, the networking at these events can lead to more business.
